Types of Funds

There are over 2000 different unit trust and OEIC funds available, which can make it difficult for investors to identify the right fund to meet their personal and financial needs. The Investment Management Association (IMA) has classified the entire range of funds into 5 broad sectors, which are further broken down into 31 sub-sectors.

The 5 broad sectors are:

  • funds principally targeting income - immediate income;
  • funds principally targeting income - growing income;
  • funds principally targeting capital - capital growth / total return;
  • funds principally targeting capital protection;
  • specialist sectors.

For more information about the IMA sector classifications and funds within those sectors, please click here to visit the Market Statistics area of the IMA website.
